Allure Beauty Box Review

The reason I was inspired to subscribe to another beauty box was due to the fact that I felt completely bored of my current beauty routine and wanted a change. I didn’t want to buy full sized products that i wasn’t sure about so i decided to once again try a beauty subscription. The allure beauty box was the best choice for me as I felt they were already leaders in recommending beauty products due to their annual allure beauty awards which I always anticipate. The box did not disappoint and I happily renewed my subscription!  The box is $15 and each box comes with 5 curated product samples of varying sizes. You can however save $5 on your first box with the code 5FORYOU

In my first box I got:

A mini benefit roller lash mascara
A deluxe sample size of the juice beauty moisturizer
A full size of a Cargo lip gloss in the color Madrid
A deluxe size of an Oscar Blandi hairspray
And a full sized Malin & Goetz lip balm.

My favorite item in this box has to be the mini benefit roller lash mascara. I’d heard a lot of hype about this product and was about to bite the bullet and buy it when I received it in this box. I was ecstatic!

I gifted this to a friend as I am natural and wouldn’t have been needing it any time soon!
I was in desperate need of a new moisturizer so I was ecstatic when I saw this. It is not my favorite moisturizer in the world though, as I prefer ones with SPF. It is a natural/organic product so I am excited to be giving it a spin and I’m excited to see what changes it brings to my skin.

My second favorite was the lip balm which ticked off all my requirements that a lip balm should fulfill. It is moisturizing, it applies easily. It smells great, and it lasts hours on my lips!

This was my third favorite item as the shade was perfect for my dark skin tone! I’d also heard rave reviews for this product line but had never had the opportunity to test any of their products out. An added bonus and the biggest reason why I loved this was the fact that I’d gotten a full size instead of a sample size!

All in all I loved this allure beauty box because it provided me with products I desperately wanted at a certain point in time. Also the quality of the items were way better than I was expecting as all the products I received were well known brands that weren’t drugstore priced. I highly recommend it!

Here’s an outfit I wore based on some inspiration I got from some recent mom jeans I got from Topshop!

The protective style I used was mainly this hat I got from Nordstrom on a steal for $7!

Beauty Box Review: Curlkit natural hair beauty box

Ever since my big chop, I’ve been on the hunt for hair products that can keep my mini fro manageable. I’ve however noticed that natural hair products carry a hefty price tag and there’s no way to know if a product will work for my specific hair type, which is 4C (or 4Z as I like to call it). I looked to natral hair blogs for a remedy to this situation and found out about the curlkit box. This is one of the more popular natural hair boxes, the other being curlbok and I immediately ofcourse subscribed. I finally received my first box today and took a few pictures while unboxing and wanted to give a quick pre-review of the box concerning customer service and first impression of the box.

Love the box design!

The box arrived way earlier  than I expected and I was ECSTATIC to find FOUR yes FOUR full sized products. These four products are a perfect startup kit for anyone with a new chop. It has a conditioner, curl definer, curl enhancer and a leave in. I’m so excited to try these products out and will be sure to post a review after two weeks.

Are you guys subscribed to any beauty boxes? I’m also thinking of subscribing to curlbox at the end of the summer and also to birchbox.

Here’s an update picture on my tenny weeny fro 🙂

TWA after a quick wash and go

TWA after a quick wash and go

I have been dying for a new purse! It all started when I spotted a super stylish girl on campus last summer with the LV neverfull and since then, I’ve been drooling each time I think about the bag. I’ve done a lot of research on higher end purses that I could use on campus and this one kept popping up on the list. The medium MM size is perfect to carry my laptop and books and I absolutely love the Damier Ebene print! Since I however can’t afford it for the time being, all I can do is make outfit posts with this very very gorgeous bag. What are some things on your wish-lists? And what do you think of the LV neverfull?

Beauty minute: ‘holy grail’ beauty products

As a girl who is reasonably obsessed with all things beauty, I have had my fair share of experiences with quite a few beauty products and would like to share with you my top five today!

5. Alaffia Shea butter ($8)

This moisturizer has to be my biggest discovery of 2013. I walked into whole foods to begin my natural healthy eating lifestyle change and walked out with a huge bag of beauty products instead of groceries. Fail! The products I got where however a big win and I ended up repurchasing the Alaffia Shea butter. Shea butter has been getting a lot of hype recently but believe me it’s worth ALL THE HYPE. I used it as a body moisturizer in Africa when I was younger as it was super cheap and plentiful with multiple functions. I went back to basics and I’m planning on asking my mom to send me a ton from the motherland.

4.Lip balm –  NUXE Reve de Miel ($10)

Being that I have quite the bad habit of biting my lips whenever I’m not busy,  I tend to have quite dry lips a lot of the time and this lip balm is my savior! I have bigger lips (thankful to my Gambian roots for that 🙂 ) and this means I have more space that sometimes need more TLC.

3. Mascara-Day to night Rimmel ($7)

I’ve gone through a lot of mascaras and through a lot of high end and drugstore choices, the Rimmel day to night mascara however is my favorite of all the ones that I’ve tried . It has two brushes, one for daytime and one for nihgttime hence the name. My lashes look so full and natural after just one coat and they never clump! It might be discontinued now in the US because the last time I bought it, they was quite a bit of it on clearance but you can always try Ebay!

2. MAC lipstick-flat out fabulous ($16)

I’m dark and so I’ve always been weary of bright lipsticks on me. I tried this lipstick with a lipliner a la recommendation of some youtube gurus and it looked ‘flat out fabulous’!  Needless to say I bought it ASAP (on the sae day as my big chop)  for a little va va voom and it was such a great choice. It’s bright pink with a purple undertone and it’s edging out Ruby woo as my favorite lipstick!

1. Mat velvet plus foundation $36)

This is the best foundation with the perfection amount of staying power and the perfect amount of coverage. Makeupforever is one of my favorite brands mainly because of their wide range of shades allowing me with my dark complexion to find my actual shade of foundation. It is also great for my sisters out there with oily skin because believe me when I tell you this absolutely mattifies!

What are your beauty favorites?

Le ‘big chop’

Yes, yes, this is yet again a blog post of a black woman talking about a dramatic change in her life surrounding the topic of hair. I have indeed joined the hundreds, nay thousands or perhaps even millions? of women who have ditched the relaxer to wear their natural hair.

This is a decision that I made after years, yes YEARS of deliberation. I loved weaves and will probably get them in the future but I had just had enough and wanted to know what I would look like if I stopped with the Olive Oil relaxers. It is important to note that this isn’t the first time that I’ve decided to go natural. It is actually the third time.

The first time was in junior high school when I was still living in The Gambia and I just woke up one day and told my mum that I wanted to stop having relaxers in my hair. My mom was completely against the idea but I went ahead to an aunt or cousin and had her scissor or all the relaxed bits. I however didn’t know what to do with my hair afterwards and simply wore turbans or scarves anytime I left the house. This grew to be exhausting and I succumbed to the call of the relaxer while at a salon getting my hair done for Eid celebrations when the hair stylist told me she simply couldn’t do natural hair.

My second dance with the big chop came a year and a half ago during winter break of y sophomore year of college in the US where I once again felt sick and tired of all the weaves and hair relaxers and the burns that came along with the relaxers and decided to grow out my hair. This led to perhaps the worst tangled mess the next time I took out some braids because my hair was two different textures. I succumbed once again and got a relaxer but this one left me feeling a little bit guilty.

The final and current attempt is the one that I’m most confident about because I’m 20 years old now and therefore think and hope that I’m mature and knowledgeable enough to handle it. I decided to chop it all off this time because I’m in the process of packing to go back home to Minneapolis after spending 3.5 months in Paris studying abroad and I wanted to do something monumental before leaving this remarkable city.

So I got on the metro, went to little Africa aka chateau d’eau, and had a barber raze off the relaxed parts. I will admit that it wasn’t the cleanest most professionally done big chop, but at the time it was exactly what I wanted, which was to just get it chopped off!

Here are some pictures of the aftermath. Wish me luck!

So, I’ll be spending the next couple of months studying abroad in Paris and I can hardly wait!! This has been a dream of mine that I’ve had for SO LONG! Now that it’s almost here, I’m mainly nervous and restless simply waiting for my departure date to get here 🙂 I’m thinking of creating a brand new blog documenting my study abroad trip featuring the above image.

I used to be a French Major and now I’m simply getting a minor but this hasn’t decreased the amount of love I have for France. I’m also double majoring in Int’l Business and Marketing so Europe is a sensible choice.

I’m so excited I can hardly keep still and Paris is constantly my main topic of conversation. Will keep you updated!
